The Story Behind the Weave:This rug was handwoven by Khadija and Haja Rokia in Ait Barra, a village outside the Todgha Gorge. This vintage Hanbel is over 40 years old. It’s made from 100% live wool, which the women carded, spun and dyed themselves. The rich colors come from beets, henna, pomegranate, saffron, indigo and mint. This piece is a living testament to the powerful traditions of this village. In Ait Barra, the weaving tradition is nurtured by Haja Rokia. At almost 100 years old, Haja has taught nearly all the women of the village to weave. As her memory has started to fade, Rokia’s daughters, Rabha and Aisha, have stepped in to run the village rug sales. Before sharing this rug with us, the family welcomed us into their home for tea. They told stories of their upbringing and the village history.
