The Story Behind the Weave:This rug comes from a village 20 km outside of Amizmiz which is based in the Al Haouz Province of Morocco.Resting in the High Atlas Mountains this province is home to the Boujad tribe and the rugs that are crafted in this region take on the tribe namesake. These rugs are hand-knotted using sheep’s wool and spice/vegetable dyes. Saida and her sister Khadijah, pictured, have recently started a village association of women weavers to help their elder neighbors sell their beautifully handcrafted rugs. This rug is roughly 40 years old and was woven by Fadma. The symbols, designs, motifs and tattoos we associate with Berber culture originated from pre-Islamic beliefs influenced later by Islamic geometric patterns and ornamentation. Vintage rugs tend to take on a lot of these symbols. In this piece the middle diamond represents strength and protection while the border symbolizes respect.*Please note, the size varies from end to end.
