The Story Behind the Weave:This rug comes from a village outside Kalaat M'Gouna where two women, Touda and Naima, worked together to make this ocean blue sabra. This rug is made from live sheep’s wool and sabra, which is a rare silk spun from Saharan aloe vera cactus. Despite the abundance of the cacti, authentic sabra silk is hard to find in Morocco because it is often cheaper from other countries. Our artisans purchased their sabra silk from the local market. The seller collected and spun this fiber himself in his village. The wool and sabra were dyed by hand using indigo stone for the base and henna, pomegranate, and saffron for the design elements. In more traditional vintage rug design, the symbolism is often a wish or depiction of the artisan’s life. These days, the next generation of artisans finds inspiration in other sources, like the natural landscapes around them. For example, the middle symbol represents an animal's paw—a symbol of strength and protection in Berber culture.
