The Story Behind the Weave:This rug comes from a village outside of Asni and was made by Khadijah. We met Khadijah at the Asni market, held every Monday in the center of town. As soon as we arrived in the market we saw Khadijah; she had set up a small section in the market to display a few rugs from her village. This rug style is called Boucherouite (pronounced boo-shay-reet). Some call them 'rag rugs,' as they are made of various recycled or retired clothing and textile scraps. These rugs were not originally intended to be sold as they were mostly used in the weavers’ own homes.Khadijah told us that she collects the old clothes from her village and after washing, she tears them apart, sets up the loom, and then makes knots with the torn fabric. This process results in an extra vibrant piece, ready to bring color to any home.
