The Story Behind the Weave:|This symbolic Hanbel was woven by Malika in her village outside Tazenakht. Malika is the matriarch of the family. She has passed the art of weaving down to her daughters, daughters-in-law, cousins, and villagers. As she is getting older, her daughter Naima has stepped in to oversee the teaching process. That said, Malika is always present when we go to visit the family and is still, to this day, creating beautiful masterpieces. This timeless piece represents generations of tradition and symbolism. For example, the middle diamond-like shape represents a spider, a symbol of magic in the Berber culture. Malika used a combination of henna, pomegranate, saffron, alfalfa, and mint to create these warm and enduring colors. Details like this give Malika’s colorful piece character that will warm any home.
