The Story Behind the Weave:The Association Le Vieux Village is a beautiful collective of women artisans in Tazenakht.Malika who has been part of the association for over two decades spent two months making this beautiful Hanbel. It’s made from 100% live wool, which the women carded, spun and dyed themselves. The colors were created with natural dyes like henna, pomegranate, saffron, indigo, alfalfa and mint. While the majority of the weave is flat, the designs have a slightly higher pile, giving this piece texture and dimension. In more traditional, vintage rug design, the symbolism is often a wish or depiction of the artisan’s life. These days, the next generation of artisans finds inspiration in other sources, like the natural landscapes around them. For example, the pronged diamond symbol represents a frog. The diamond shapes can be interpreted as flowers or symbols of protection against the evil eye. Details like this give Malika’s Technical Glaoui piece character that will shine in any home.
