> Mlouka & Naima's Kasbah Hanbel
Size: 5 x 5.2 ft (1.52 x 1.58 m)Rug Style: HanbelPile: Flat with small pile dispersed throughout Materials: 100% live sheep’s wool, organic spice blends for dye The Story Behind the Weave:This Hanbel is woven by mother-daughter duo, Mlouka & Naima.Mlouka and Naima lead a beautiful collective of women artisans just outside of Tazenakht.
Made from 100% live wool, Naima and her sister Fatima carded, spun and dyed the wool themselves while Naima & Mlouka wove the piece.
The colors were created with natural dyes using spices & plants such as pomegranate skin, beets, saffron, and indigo stone. While the majority of the weave is flat, the designs have a slightly higher pile, giving this piece texture and dimension. The blue border surrounding the piece represents the defensive wall that usually surrounds a Kasbah. The geometric shapes within the walls represent symbols from the Tamazight language as well as symbolism of protection, strength, and luck to name a few.
