The Story Behind the Weave:The Association Le Vieux Village is a beautiful collective of women artisans in Tazenakht. This 41-year-old vintage rug comes from Mlouka, the matriarch of the family. Mlouka cleaned, spun, and dyed all of the yarn herself using 100% live wool. In addition to natural black wool, she used henna, pomegranate and saffron to create the accent colors throughout the rug.One tell-tale way to spot vintage rugs is by their odd shapes. Rugs like these, long but smaller in width, were made to fit the old kasbahs of Morocco. Today, artisans work in more modern rug sizes.
In more traditional vintage rug design, the symbolism is often a wish or depiction of the artisan’s life. For example, the repeated geometric shape represent a spider—a wish for magical protection.
