The Story Behind the Weave:This breathtaking, one-of-a-kind piece took Rabha eight months to weave. It’s made from 100% live sheep’s wool, which Rabha carded, spun and dyed herself using henna, pomegranate and saffron. Rabha embroidered the rug’s intricate designs by hand and individually applied sequins from her local market to give this masterpiece texture and movement. Rabha lives in a village outside the Todgha Gorge, where she learned to weave from her mother, Rokia. At almost 100 years old, Rokia has taught most of the women in the village to weave, but she has started to lose her memory. Now, Rabha has taken on the task of passing the weaving craft to the next generation of artisans—just as the women of this region have done for centuries.
