The Story Behind the Weave:This rug was handwoven by Haja Touda in the Todgha Gorge village. Haja Touda doesn’t know when she was born, but remembers that Mohammed V was in power when she was a child. Based on this, we believe she is 95 years old. This beautiful rug took Haja Touda more than 12 months to make. We were unable to translate the spices she used to create the rich colors, but we believe she used a combination of henna, indigo, mint, alfalfa and saffron. The three lines that zigzag across the top of the rug represent the nomad tents the people of the village live in. The diagonal lines coming from the tents symbolize children growing up and leaving their homes. The diamonds at the bottom of the rug represent the creative and stable lives the families wish for their children. The dots throughout the rug symbolize the village garden which helps nourish life at every stage. We met Haja Touda during a Sadaka, which is a vigil held in memory of someone’s death. As we purchased the rug, they lit a Bakhor to provide it with additional protective qualities.
