The Story Behind the Weave:This rug was handwoven by Rabha. Rabha lives in the Todgha Gorge, in a village of 460 people. We first met Rabha in her home where she invited us in for tea. We then walked to the village school house where we looked at several rugs. Rabha is a widow with three daughters in school, two in university and one in high school. She is one of the most senior women in the village, and all the other women trust her to house and sell their rugs. This beautiful black and white rug was handwoven by Rabha herself. It took her 17 months and tells an intricate story of her village. The middle lines on the rug represent the tree of life. The long diagonal lines are meant to promote full, high waters on the nearby Todra River. On either side of the tree of life, there are three diamonds; this is the tribal symbol representing the village. Finally, there is an abstract evil eye to protect both the weaver and the textile itself.Rabha’s craftsmanship and storytelling make this rug a statement piece, unique in every sense of the word.
