The Story Behind the Weave:This vintage rug is over 30 years old and comes from the Ait Ouaghrda village which is located in the southeast of Morocco. This piece was woven by the sister, or Taytamtin in Amazigh, of the family that decided to sell the piece. Made from all 100% “live” wool which was carded, brushed and spun by the women in the village, its thought that the artisans used plants, spices and herbs to dye the wool to achieve these vibrant hues. In more traditional vintage rug design, the symbolism is often a wish or depiction of the artisan’s life.
For example, the outer border is thought to represent a symbol of fertility and magic while the repetitive elements in the middle represent protection from evil.
Due to the age of this piece, you may find some light fraying on either end. With that said, with proper care, this piece will continue to last for many years to come.
