Ait Barra Red Flatweave

Regular price $1,069.00

This rug was handwoven by Rachida, Fatma and Fatima in Ait Barra, a village outside the Todgha Gorge.

Rachida, Fatma and Fatima spent three months on this large flatweave. It’s made from 100% live wool, which the women carded, spun and dyed themselves. The rich colors come from henna, pomegranate, saffron and vinegar.

This piece is a living testament to the powerful traditions of this village. In Ait Barra, the weaving tradition is nurtured by a woman named Rokia. At almost 100 years old, Rokia has taught nearly all the women of the village to weave, including Rachida, Fatma and Fatima. Because of her seniority, the artisans trust Rokia to house and sell their rugs.

As her memory has started to fade, Rokia’s daughters, Rabha and Latifa, have stepped in to run the village rug sales. Before sharing this rug with us, Rabha and Latifa welcomed us into their home for tea and couscous. They told stories of their upbringing and the village history, and Rokia shared her own stories from childhood, her parents’ early passing, and how the village has changed in her lifetime. These women have shared their wisdom generously with the next generation of weavers, and with us.
