The Story Behind the Weave:This rug comes from a village outside of Asni and was made by artisans in the village that Khadija, pictured, lives in.We first met Khadijah over a year ago at the women's only market held every Monday in the center of town. The Boucherouite (pronounced boo-shay-reet) weave is made of various recycled clothing and textile scraps. These rugs were not originally intended to be sold as they were mostly used in the weavers’ own homes.
This timeless piece represents generations of tradition and symbolism. For example the symbols in the middle represents an animal skeletons which is thought to symbolize magical/medicinal properties in the Amazigh culture.
Due to the age of this piece, you will find some light fraying on either end as well as inconsistencies in the width of the piece. With proper care, this piece will continue to charm for many years to come.
