The Story Behind the Weave:This rug will be woven by 3 women under the leadership of Fadma. These ladies are from a village 20 km outside of Amizmiz which is based in the Al Haouz Province of Morocco.Resting in the High Atlas Mountains this province is home to the Boujad tribe and the rugs that are crafted in this region take on the tribe namesake. These rugs are hand-knotted using sheep’s wool and spice/vegetable dyes. Saida and her sister Khadijah, pictured, have recently started a village association of women weavers to help their elder neighbors sell their beautifully handcrafted rugs. The symbols, designs, motifs and tattoos we associate with Berber culture originated from pre-Islamic beliefs influenced later by Islamic geometric patterns and ornamentation. In this piece the middle diamond represents strength and protection while the border symbolizes respect. Each rug is made entirely by hand so there will always be small variations in size, pattern and color due to the organic nature of the materials, but we strive to accurately capture the detail and color so you know what you’re getting.
