The Story Behind the Weave:The Association Le Vieux Village is a beautiful collective of women artisans in Tazenakht. This 35-year-old vintage Berber rug comes from a family just outside Tazenakht. Fatma, the matriarch of the family, weaves in her home and brings her finished products to the association for them to store and sell on her behalf. This rug was made by Fatma’s mother-in-law. She believes it took her mother-in-law seven to nine months to weave. Her mother-in-law cleaned, spun, and dyed all of the yarn herself using 100% live wool. She used henna and pomegranate to create the red color and a blend of henna and saffron to create the orange hues. The more muted colors are from alfalfa and mint. One tell-tale way to spot vintage rugs is by their odd shapes. Rugs like these, long but smaller in width, were made to fit the old kasbahs of Morocco. Today, artisans work in more modern rug sizes. This piece is a rare find. You will find some light fraying on either end due its 35-year lifespan, but with proper care, this rug will endure for decades to come.
