The Story Behind the Weave:This rug was handwoven by Khadija, at her weaving association called Association Anezal. Khadija is from the Ait Bolumane tribe, but moved here when she married into the Ait Wawzguid tribe, which makes up most of Anezal. On the day we visited Association Anezal, we met with Khadija’s colleagues and they showed us this beautiful piece. This flatweave rug is 100% wool and was carded, spun and dyed by Khadija and her friends at the association. The beautiful white that you see is undyed, natural wool. The embroidery designs were dyed with henna, saffron, and pomegranate. In more traditional, vintage rug design, the symbolism is often a wish or depiction of the artisan’s life. These days, the next generation of artisans finds inspiration in other sources, like the natural landscapes around them. For example, the pronged diamond symbol in the center of this rug represents a frog. The diamond shapes in the four corners can be interpreted as flowers or symbols of protection against the evil eye. Details like this give Khadijah’s minimalist piece character that will shine in any home.
