The Story Behind the Weave:We met mother and daughter Mbarka and Khadijah six months ago on our first trip to Tazenakht. Since then, Mbarka and Khadijah have become wonderful friends and taught us so much. There was excitement in the air as we sat down to catch up on life over tea. Meanwhile, Khadijah’s son went to get his grandmother Mbarka so we could go together to see the new rugs. Mbarka and Khadijah spent two months on this weave. We saw the work in progress on an earlier trip and couldn’t wait for the finished piece. It came together more beautifully than we could have imagined. This style is called Hanbel. It’s woven with sheep’s wool from the local market. The colors were created with natural ingredients like henna, pomegranate, saffron, indigo, alfalfa and mint. Buying the yarn from the market allowed the women to spend more time on these intricate designs. While the majority of the weave is flat, the designs have a slightly higher pile, giving this piece texture and dimension.
