The Story Behind the Weave:
This Hanbel is woven by Rokia.
Rokia belongs to a collective of women artisans just outside of Tazenakht.
Made from 100% live wool, the women of the association, spun and dyed the wool themselves while Rokia wove the piece.
The colors were created with natural dyes using spices & plants such as indigo stone for the base and pomegranate skin, beets, and saffron for the design elements.
The saffron lined borders that lead to the center of the rug represents a defensive wall that usually surrounds a village or kasbah. The 4 shapes on each corner represents the mosques within the 4 villages that surround the kasbah.
While the majority of the weave is flat, the designs have a slightly higher pile, giving this piece texture and dimension.
