Rokia’s Traditional Vintage

This vintage piece was handwoven by Rokia in her village outside the Todgha Gorge over 40 years ago. Rokia used a combination of henna, pomegranate, saffron and indigo to create these warm and enduring colors.

At nearly 100 years old, Rokia has managed to raise her children, run her household and teach most of the women in the village to weave. She has helped to pass the weaving tradition to the next generation and in turn the artisans of the village trust Rokia to house and sell their rugs. As she has begun to lose her memory, her oldest daughters, Rabha and Latifa, have stepped in to oversee the process.

Pictured here is Rokia holding her prayer beads—she didn’t want her face photographed. This is one of the last remaining pieces that Rokia wove herself; in fact, Rabha and Latifa remember their mother working on this textile back when she was first teaching them to weave.

This timeless piece represents generations of tradition, and with proper care it will continue to warm your home for generations to come.
