The Story Behind the Weave:This vintage Berber rug is over 60 years old and comes from the El Kasbah village which is part of the Tazenakht tribe. This rug was made by Naima’s mother-in-law. She believes it took her mother-in-law three months to weave. The three hero symbols located in the center of the rug are simply named the eight-pointed star. Based on the same structure as the Hamsa hand, an ancient amulet symbolizing the Hand of God, it is now thought to represent female fertility.
One tell-tale way to spot vintage rugs is by their odd shapes. Rugs like these, long but smaller in width, were made to fit the old kasbahs of Morocco. Today, artisans work in more modern rug sizes. Due to the age of this piece, you will find some light fraying on either end. With proper care, this piece will continue to charm for many years to come.
