Pile

Flatweave

Flatweave rugs, known locally as Hanbel or Aknif, are thin, soft, and exceptionally strong. Woven without pile, they are lightweight yet durable, with patterns that carry deep symbolic meaning. All of our flatweaves are made in the south of Morocco, a region renowned for producing the highest quality flatweave textiles. The result is a versatile rug with a clean profile and lasting character.

Royal Hand-Knot

A historic weaving technique with roots dating back to the 17th century, when artisans fleeing Andalusia after the Reconquista brought advanced textile traditions to Morocco. Similar to a tufted rug in density and finish, this technique uses exceptionally fine wool to create luxurious, high quality pieces. Historically, this rug style was a symbol of status and wealth, often found in royal courts and aristocratic homes.

Medium-to-High Hand-Knot

There are many rug styles that fall within the medium to high hand knot category, including Boujad, Azilal, Beni Ourain, and Marmoucha. While these rugs share certain characteristics, the knotting technique varies by region and tribe. The knot style referenced here draws from Beni M’Rirt traditions, where rugs are crafted using a dense, thick knotting technique that results in an especially plush and luxurious texture.

Low Hand-Knot

Low hand knot rugs are most commonly found among southeastern tribes in and around the Siroua region. The pile is shorter than that of rugs woven in northern regions, yet the pieces remain soft, warm, and inviting. A key technical distinction is that artisans typically pre cut the wool before weaving it onto the loom, whereas in northern regions the wool is cut after it has been looped around the loom.
