The Story Behind the Weave:This rug was handwoven by a villager in Ait Barra which is located just outside the Todgha Gorge. This vintage hand-knot is over 30 years old. It’s made from 100% live wool, which her mother-in-law carded, spun and dyed herself. This piece is a living testament to the powerful traditions of this village. In Ait Barra, the weaving tradition is nurtured by Haja Rokia. At almost 100 years old, Haja has taught nearly all the women of the village to weave. As her memory has started to fade, Rokia’s daughters, Rabha and Aisha, have stepped in to run the village rug sales. Before sharing this rug with us, the family welcomed us into their home for tea. They told stories of their upbringing and the village history.
