The Story Behind the Weave:
This Hanbel is woven by Fatima.
Fatima is a senior leader of a beautiful collective of women artisans just outside of Tazenakht.
Made from 100% live wool, Fatima carded, spun and dyed the wool. The colors were created with natural dyes using spice blends & local plants such as pomegranate skin, beets, saffron, henna and turmeric. While the majority of the weave is flat, the designs have a slightly higher pile, giving this piece texture and dimension.
The border surrounding the piece represents the defensive wall that usually surrounds a Kasbah. The geometric shapes within the walls represent symbols from the Tamazight language as well as symbolism of protection, strength, and luck to name a few.
