The Story Behind the Weave:This Hanbel will be woven by Latifa.
Latifa is part of a collective of women artisans just outside of Tazenakht, a village that is known for its weaving history.Latifa learned how to weave from her mother-in-law, Mlouka. The matriarch of the village, she has passed the art of weaving down to her daughters, daughters-in-law, cousins, and villagers. Using 100% live wool and all natural spices, this piece exudes classic beauty. The rug’s base color comes from undyed wool and the symbolism hand stitched and embroidered into the weave comes from henna, pomegranate skin, indigo, saffron flower and mint.
Every design element comes entirely from Latifa's imagination - the symbols within this rug depict protection from evil, strength, beauty and respect just to name a few.
Each rug is made entirely by hand so there will always be small variations in pattern, color and exact size (up to 10 cm variation) due to the organic nature of the materials but we strive to accurately capture the detail and color so you know what you’re getting. We do our best to visit the artisans every two to three weeks to capture the progression of the weave.
