The Story Behind the Weave:
This Glaoui rug was woven by Ija.
Ija is part of the Association Le Vieux Village, a beautiful collective of women artisans just outside of Tazenakht. Naima, pictured, is the leader of the Association.
Made from 100% wool, the women of the association carded, spun and dyed the wool by hand. The colors were created with natural dyes like henna, pomegranate skin, saffron, alfalfa and mint.
This rug style is known as Glaoui. It is an extremely technical weave as it incorporates three techniques: Hand-weaving, hand-knotting and hand-embroidery.
