The Story Behind the Weave:This Hanbel will be woven by mother and daughter Mbarka and Khadija.
Mbarka and Khadija were the first artisans we ever worked with and through the years they have become wonderful friends and taught us so much. This style is called Hanbel. It’s woven with sheep’s wool from the local market. The colors are created with natural ingredients like henna, pomegranate, saffron, indigo, alfalfa and mint. While the majority of the weave is flat, the designs have a slightly higher pile, giving this piece texture and dimension.
Every design element comes entirely from the artisan’s imagination - the symbols within this rug depict protection from evil, strength, beauty and respect just to name a few. Each rug is made entirely by hand so there will always be small variations in pattern, color and exact size (up to 10 cm variation) due to the organic nature of the materials but we strive to accurately capture the detail and color so you know what you’re getting. We do our best to visit the artisans every two to three weeks to capture the progression of the weave.
