This vintage rug was made by artisans of the Ouaouzguiti Association and is estimated to be over 60 years old.
The Ouaouzguiti Association is made up of a constellation of 125 artisans in ten Villages throughout the Siroua region. Founded over 80 years ago, this enduring Association makes a large variety of rugs.
This vintage rug style combines two of techniques; the base of the rug is a thin Flatweave and the design motifs are brought to life through the Boucherouite technique. The Flatweave technique is thin, soft, strong and full of symbolism. They’re also called “hanbel” or “aknif” in Arabic.
The Boucherouite (pronounced boo-shay-reet) technique utilizes recycled pre-used clothing or textile scraps to create the design motifs.
The Zanafi weaving technique comes from the High Atlas Mountains. This technique requires the highest level of skill and concentration. Each row is created with an intricate system of counting. This style is extra special as it's reversible.
The design motifs most used in this rug have been passed down through generations representing strength and protection in the Amazigh culture.
