Siroua Shades is a tribute to the generational craft that inspired us to start Salam Hello. Woven in Ait Moulay Ali, many of the artisans led by Fadma originated in the Siroua region near Tazenakht, an area renowned for its deep weaving heritage. They later moved closer to Marrakech in search of more opportunities, carrying their craft with them.
Crafted entirely by hand using ancestral tools and 100% natural Siroua wool, the process begins high in the mountains, where the wool is sheared by hand and washed in the clear waters of the Zat River using only Moroccan black soap. From there, it reaches our master dyer, who works exclusively with natural henna to create a nuanced spectrum of warm, earthen tones that mirror the volcanic terrain and sunbaked palette of the Siroua Mountains.
This piece is a flatweave, a technique for which this region is known. The flatweaves from Siroua are thin, soft, strong, and full of symbolism. They are often referred to as “Hanbel” or “Aknif” in Arabic.
This design is named Tasskalya (ⵜⴰⵙⴽⴰⵍⵢⴰ), the Tamazight word for “heritage” or “transmission,” reflecting the passing down of knowledge and tradition from one generation to the next.
Each rug is crafted and dyed entirely by hand, resulting in up to 10 percent variation in pattern and color. No two rugs are ever exactly alike. Available in a range of sizes, these pieces are woven slowly, intentionally, and with great care.
