The Story Behind the Weave:
This rug was handwoven by Rokia and her daughter Aicha, pictured.
Rokia and Aicha live in a village 12km north of Tazenakht named Taghdot.
Made with 100% "live" wool, Aicha and Rokia carded, brushed and spun the wool by hand. Both the white and black colors are natural, undyed sheep's wool.
This design is inspired by a vintage rug that their Aunt made over 20 years ago. It’s thought that this checkerboard design symbolizes barley in the Amazigh culture and could be a wish for fertility for the weaver, or for the rug’s final home.
