> Rokia and Aicha's Inverted Checkerboard
Size: 3'-9" x 7'-4" (1.15 x 2.25 m)Rug Style: Hand-KnotPile: LowMaterials: 100% live sheep’s wool, undyed wool
The Story Behind the Weave:This rug was handwoven by Rokia and her daughter Aicha, pictured.Rokia and Aicha live in a village 12km north of Tazenakht named Taghdot.Made with 100% "live" wool, Aicha and Rokia carded, brushed and spun the wool by hand. Both the white and black colors are natural, undyed sheep's wool. This design is inspired by a vintage rug that their Aunt made over 20 years ago. It’s thought that this checkerboard design symbolizes barley in the Amazigh culture and could be a wish for fertility for the weaver, or for the rug’s final home.
