This rug will be handwoven by sisters, Fatima and Naima.

Fatima and Naima belong to a female-only weaving association just outside of Tazenakht, a town known for its weaving history.

This design is inspired by a vintage rug that their aunt made over 20 years ago.

The sisters will use 100% "live" sheep's wool that they will clean, brush and spin themselves.

It’s thought that this checkerboard design symbolizes barley and could be a wish for fertility for the weaver, or for the rug’s final home.

Each rug is made entirely by hand so there will always be small variations in pattern, color and exact size (up to 10 cm / 4" variation) due to the organic nature of the materials.

- Time to Make: Current weave time averages around 8-10 weeks. Rugs larger than 9' x 12' may take an additional 2 weeks. We do our best to visit the artisans every 2 to 3 weeks to capture the progression of the weave.

Le Vieux Village Association

The Association Le Vieux Village is a beautiful collective of women artisans just outside of Tazenakht. This Association is a true family affair. Mlouka, the matriarch of the collective, has passed the art of weaving down to her daughters, Naima and Fatima, daughters-in-law, Latifa and Meriem, cousins, and villagers. All of the rugs from Le Vieux are made from 100% live wool that was brushed, carded, and hand-spun by the women of the Association.

Rug Style

Low Hand-Knot

The Low Hand-Knot style of rug most often comes from the southeastern Tribes in and around the Siroua region. The pile of these rugs is much shorter than the Hand-Knot rugs from the north. Despite the shorter pile, these pieces are still quite plush and cozy.

One significant difference in technique with this rug is the artisans usually pre-cut the wool prior to weaving on the loom, while the women in the north cut the wool after looping it around the loom.
