This rug was woven by a talented group of artisans from a village near Beni M’rirt, nestled in the Middle Atlas Mountains.

Led by Soukina, this collective of 35 artisans has been crafting exquisite handwoven pieces since the early 2000s, when Soukina’s late mother founded the group. Specializing in medium-to-high hand-knot rugs, a style deeply rooted in the region’s tradition, their work is renowned for its thick knotting technique, which gives these rugs their signature plush texture.

Made from 100% “live” wool and dyed using natural methods by a third-generation family of dye artisans, this rug has been finished with a symmetrical cut of the pile, resulting in a low, dense texture that softens the surface while preserving the weight and durability of the weave.

Each rug is made entirely by hand so there will always be small variations in pattern, color and exact size (up to 10 cm / 4" variation) due to the organic nature of the materials.

Soukina and the Artisans of M’rirt

Soukina leads a group of 35 artisans from a village just outside Beni M’rirt in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Founded in the early 2000s by Soukina’s late mother, Ketlouma, the collective specializes in medium to high hand-knot rugs—a style named after the region—as well as M’rirt Zanafi rugs, their unique interpretation of the Zanafi style from the southeast. Traditional rugs from this area are crafted using a thick knotting technique, resulting in an extra-plush texture.

Rug Style

Low Hand-Knot

The Low Hand-Knot style of rug most often comes from the southeastern Tribes in and around the Siroua region. The pile of these rugs is much shorter than the Hand-Knot rugs from the north. Despite the shorter pile, these pieces are still quite plush and cozy.

One significant difference in technique with this rug is the artisans usually pre-cut the wool prior to weaving on the loom, while the women in the north cut the wool after looping it around the loom.
